Gym dropout statistics 2026: why people quit and what makes them stay

How many people quit the gym?
Most, and early. In a retrospective study of 5,240 members of a fitness centre followed for up to 12 months, 63% of new members abandoned their activities before the third month and fewer than 4% remained for more than 12 months of continuous activity; age, previous activity level, starting body mass index and motivation (weight loss, hypertrophy, health or aesthetics) all predicted the risk of quitting, and even members with the best combination of traits still had a high risk of dropping out within a year (Sperandei et al., Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2016).
Industry-wide figures are less bleak because they count everyone, not just newcomers. In the US, the share of members who did not use their membership at all fell from around 10% to 4.6% in 2025, and the Health & Fitness Association describes 2025's churn as a decade low with average membership tenure rising (HFA, 2026; HFA, 2026 headline trends). Randomised exercise trials retain more people than gyms do: across 14 trials, 599 of 783 enrolled participants (76%) were retained, with no consistent difference between continuous and intermittent programmes (Linke et al., Annals of Behavioral Medicine, 2011).
How often do gym members actually go?
Around 80 times a year on average, and far less than they expect when they sign up. The average US member visited a facility 81 times in 2023, up from 72 in 2021 but below the 119 visits of 2019 (HFA, 2024). The classic study of three US health clubs found members who chose a flat monthly fee of more than $70 attended on average 4.3 times a month, paying more than $17 per expected visit when a 10-visit pass would have cost $10 a visit, and forgoing about $600 in savings over their membership; people on monthly contracts were nonetheless 17% more likely to stay enrolled beyond a year than those who committed for a year up front (DellaVigna & Malmendier, American Economic Review, 2006).
Door counts have been climbing: US commercial fitness facilities averaged more than 184,000 visits per location in 2025, up 4.2%, for a 19th consecutive quarter of growth, and monthly visits per visitor rose 1.1% (HFA FIT Tracker, powered by Placer.ai, January 2026). In January 2026, visitor frequency at Planet Fitness held steady while several other analysed chains saw slight declines (Placer.ai, February 2026).
How many New Year's fitness resolutions survive?
Fewer than half, but more than for people who never resolve. 31% of Americans said they would make a resolution or set a goal for 2026, with adults under 45 about twice as likely as older adults (43% vs 21%); "exercise more" was the most common resolution, chosen by 25%, ahead of being happy (23%), eating healthier (22%), saving more money (21%) and improving physical health (21%); 39% of resolvers thought it very likely and 50% somewhat likely that they would keep it all year (YouGov, December 2025). A year earlier saving money led at 26% with exercise at 22%, and of those who had resolved to save money in 2024, 16% said they stuck to it entirely and 57% mostly (YouGov, December 2024).
The best controlled evidence on outcomes followed 159 resolvers and 123 comparable non-resolvers for six months: 46% of the resolvers were continuously successful versus 4% of the non-resolvers, and self-efficacy, skills to change and readiness to change measured before 1 January all predicted success (Norcross et al., Journal of Clinical Psychology, 2002).
How long does it take to make exercise a habit?
Weeks to months, depending on the person. When 96 volunteers repeated a chosen daily behaviour in the same context for 12 weeks, the time to reach 95% of their personal ceiling of automaticity ranged from 18 to 254 days, and missing one opportunity did not materially affect habit formation (Lally et al., European Journal of Social Psychology, 2010). In new gym members specifically, exercising at least four times a week for six weeks was the minimum needed to establish an exercise habit; consistency (β = .21), low complexity (β = .19), a stable environment (β = .17) and enjoying it (β = .13) all predicted habit growth (Kaushal & Rhodes, Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 2015).
Timing helps more than time of day. Among 375 people in the National Weight Control Registry, the 68.0% who exercised at a consistent time of day did more sessions (4.8 vs 4.4 a week), more minutes (median 350 vs 285) and were more likely to meet the 150-minute guideline (86.3% vs 74.2%) than inconsistent exercisers — and it did not matter whether that time was morning or evening (Schumacher et al., Obesity, 2019).
Does tracking your workouts help you stick with them?
It is the single most effective technique in the literature. Across 122 evaluations of physical-activity and healthy-eating interventions with 44,747 participants, self-monitoring explained more of the difference in effectiveness than any other technique, and interventions that combined self-monitoring with at least one other self-regulation technique such as goal setting or planning were markedly more effective (effect 0.42 versus 0.26) (Michie et al., Health Psychology, 2009). Apps and trackers that automate the monitoring add about 1,850 steps a day in randomised trials, more so when they include messaging and personalisation (Laranjo et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2021).
Does a coach or trainer make a difference?
Yes, on both progress and load. Fitness-club members aged 30–44 randomised to 12 weeks of trainer-directed, periodised training gained 1.3 kg of lean mass while self-directed members gained none, improved chest-press strength 42% versus 19%, leg power 6% versus 0.6% and VO2max 7% versus −0.3% (Storer et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2014). In an earlier trial of 20 moderately trained men on identical programmes, the directly supervised group raised its training loads faster and finished 12 weeks with significantly greater squat and bench-press maxima (Mazzetti et al., Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2000). Nearly one in four US members (22.6%) used a personal trainer in 2024, averaging 21 sessions a year, down from 28 in 2019 (HFA, 2025).
Does training with other people help?
Markedly. Women who cycled alongside a virtually present, stronger partner whose result depended on theirs kept going for 21.89 minutes on average, against 19.77 minutes exercising side by side and 10.6 minutes alone, across six sessions (Irwin et al., Annals of Behavioral Medicine, 2012). An eight-week randomised study found that finding a new exercise companion raised the emotional support people received, which in turn increased self-efficacy, self-monitoring and planning, and through them exercise itself (Rackow et al., British Journal of Health Psychology, 2015).
Platform data points the same way. Strava reports that new clubs nearly quadrupled in 2025 to 1 million in total and that 54% of users track more than one activity type (Strava, December 2025); users who uploaded two or more sport types in January had 75% more active days and 62% more active time than single-sport users, and while 18–29-year-olds were the most likely to set January goals, people aged 60 and over were the most likely to achieve them (Strava, January 2023).
What dose of exercise is realistic to sustain?
Three to five sessions of about 45 minutes. Across 1.2 million US adults, the association between exercise and fewer days of poor mental health was strongest at durations of about 45 minutes and frequencies of three to five times a week, and more was not always better (Chekroud et al., The Lancet Psychiatry, 2018).
