What percentage of people exercise regularly?
Short answer: it depends entirely on what "regularly" means, so here are the measured versions. Worldwide, 31% of adults — 1.8 billion people — fall short of the recommended 150 minutes a week, so about 69% reach it. In the United States, 46.9% of adults meet the aerobic guideline, 24.2% meet both the aerobic and the strength guideline, and 23.4% do any sport or exercise on a given day. The stricter the definition, the smaller the group — and by the strictest one, fewer than one in four Americans is "regular".
What percentage of the world exercises?
Roughly two-thirds of adults meet the minimum, and the share is shrinking. The global age-standardised prevalence of insufficient physical activity — less than 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week — was 31.3% in 2022, up from 23.4% in 2000 and 26.4% in 2010, across 507 surveys covering 5.7 million people in 197 countries; it is rising in 103 countries and is 5 percentage points higher among women (33.8%) than men (28.7%) (Strain et al., The Lancet Global Health, 2024). The WHO's summary: about 1.8 billion adults were insufficiently active in 2022, inactivity is projected to reach 35% by 2030, and the highest rates are in high-income Asia Pacific (48%) and South Asia (45%), the lowest in Oceania (14%) (WHO, 2024).
What percentage of Americans exercise regularly?
| Definition of "regular" | Share of US adults | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Meets the aerobic guideline (150 min moderate/wk) | 46.9% (2020) | CDC/NCHS |
| Meets the muscle-strengthening guideline (≥2 days/wk) | 31.0% (2020) | CDC/NCHS |
| Meets both guidelines | 24.2% (2020); 26.4% age-adjusted (2024) | CDC/NCHS; Healthy People 2030 |
| Meets neither | 46.3% (2020) | CDC/NCHS |
| Reaches 150 min/wk (industry tracking) | 32% (2025) | SFIA |
| Did sport, exercise or recreation on an average day | 23.4% (2025) | BLS |
| No physical activity outside work in the past month | 25.3% (2017–2020) | CDC/BRFSS |
In 2020, 46.9% of US adults met the aerobic guideline, 31.0% the muscle-strengthening guideline, 24.2% both and 46.3% neither; men (28.3%) were ahead of women (20.4%) on meeting both (CDC/NCHS Data Brief 443, 2022). Healthy People 2030's age-adjusted measure of adults meeting both guidelines moved from 25.2% in 2020 to 26.4% in 2024, against a target of 29.7% (PA-05). The sports industry's own tracking puts 32% of Americans at the 150-minute mark and 68% below it, with the totally inactive share below 20% (SFIA, 2026).
What percentage of people exercise daily?
About one in four Americans on any given day. In 2025, 23.4% of the US population aged 15 and over took part in sports, exercise or recreation on an average day — 25.7% of men and 21.1% of women — and those who did spent 1.47 hours on it (Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Time Use Survey 2025). Averaged across everyone, that is 0.34 hours a day.
What percentage of people don't exercise at all?
One in four US adults, outside work. Combined 2017–2020 data show 25.3% of adults did no physical activity or exercise beyond their job in the past month, ranging from 17.7% in Colorado to 49.4% in Puerto Rico, and from 21.0% in the West to 27.5% in the South (CDC, BRFSS). Among US adults in a 397,423-person survey, 57.8% did no muscle-strengthening exercise at all (Bennie et al., American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2018).
What percentage of people exercise in the UK and Europe?
The comparable European figure is for strength training: only 17.3% of adults across 28 countries did muscle-strengthening exercise on two or more days a week, from 0.7%–7.4% in Romania, Malta and Cyprus to 34.1%–51.6% in Iceland, Sweden and Denmark (Bennie et al., PLOS ONE, 2020). For gym membership specifically, 18% of UK adults are members (ukactive, 2026) and 9.3% of Europeans (EuropeActive/Deloitte, 2026).
What percentage of teenagers exercise?
Very few by the guideline. Globally, 81.0% of 11–17-year-olds were insufficiently active in 2016 — 77.6% of boys and 84.7% of girls (Guthold et al., The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, 2020). In the US, the share of high-school students meeting both the daily aerobic and the muscle-strengthening guideline fell from 20.0% in 2017 to 16.5% in 2023 (Healthy People 2030, PA-08).
Why the numbers disagree
Because each measures something different: a self-reported guideline, a single day's diary, a monthly yes/no, or an industry survey with its own threshold. The consistent picture across all of them is that between a quarter and a third of adults do roughly enough, a quarter do nothing, and the rest sit in between — which is why the gym-member subgroup stands out: 49.4% of US fitness facility members meet the aerobic guideline versus 24.5% of non-users (HFA, 2026).
FAQ
Do 75% of Americans not exercise?
No. About 46.9% meet the aerobic guideline and 25.3% report doing nothing outside work; the "75%" figure matches the share who fail the stricter both-guidelines test (about 76%), not the share who never exercise.
What percentage of people exercise 3 times a week?
No national survey reports that exact cut; the closest is the 31.0% of US adults who do muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days a week and the 23.4% who exercise on any given day.
Is 30 minutes a day enough?
Thirty minutes of moderate activity five days a week is 150 minutes, the guideline minimum (CDC).
